The Pathet Lao was a communist political movement and military organization in Laos during the Vietnam War. They were the Laotian counterpart of the North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong in neighboring Vietnam.
The Pathet Lao emerged in the 1950s as a political and military force seeking to overthrow the royal government of Laos and establish a communist regime. They received support from North Vietnam and China, both of which saw Laos as an important battleground in the wider Indochina conflict.
During the Vietnam War, the Pathet Lao fought alongside the North Vietnamese Army against the Royal Lao Government and its U.S.-backed allies. They aimed to control key areas of Laos, disrupt supply lines along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, and prevent the United States from using Laos as a base for military operations against North Vietnam.
The conflict in Laos was marked by heavy bombing campaigns by the United States, targeting the Ho Chi Minh Trail and other strategic locations. Despite this, the Pathet Lao and their North Vietnamese allies managed to gain control over large parts of Laos by the late 1960s.
In 1975, following the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Vietnam, the Pathet Lao succeeded in overthrowing the Royal Lao Government and established the Lao People's Democratic Republic, which remains the ruling government in Laos to this day.
